Daikin has released more information on the VRV 5 S-Series, the latest addition to the company’s mini-VRV systems. The new low height range is the latest in a series of product innovations central to its goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
Vienna, July 2020 – An all-new design developed for use with R-32 refrigerant, the VRV 5 S-Series sets new standards in sustainability, with a GWP of less than a third of its predecessors. Incorporating the latest thinking in HVAC-R, the VRV 5 S-Series leads the field with a host of new design features that offer superior flexibility in installation and unparalleled ease of handling and serviceability. Unique in the market, the new system offers true VRV installation flexibility while ensuring compliance to the highest health & safety legislation. This means installers can be confident of a risk-free installation with no added liability.
Fully compliant with international safety standards for electrical heat pumps and air-conditioners
Developing a truly flexible VRV system with R-32 refrigerant presented a few challenges, since the refrigerant quantities of VRV systems are higher than in previously launched Daikin Split and Sky Air systems.
“At Daikin we have always strived to make system design as easy as possible and assume the liability for the system installation from the installer, provided the simple and clear installation instructions are followed”, says Kevin Cornelis, head of VRV 5 design. “In the case of the new VRV 5, our aim was to deliver a ready to install system in rooms down to 10m2, fully compliant to IEC603335-2-40 (Ed.6).”
The graph below shows the minimum room surface allowable for a typical mini VRV system with 6.5 kgs of total refrigerant charge, where no additional measures have been applied, as 39m2. The introduction of 2 factory-integrated measures in the Daikin solution, as also shown below, allows rooms from just 10m² to be covered while avoiding the additional costs or calculations arising from the implementation of extra measures in the field. This opens up the full potential of VRV flexibility to installers, for both new-build or refurbishment and renovation applications.
For any type of installation, the Xpress selection software will always indicate the minimum room size to ensure easy compliancy.

The IEC603335-2-40 (Ed.6) states that 3 types of measures can be used to increase the system flexibility: ventilation, shut-off valves and an alarm. To provide the 2 measures built into the system, Daikin opted to integrate shut-off valves and an alarm. Compliance of these measures and controls to IEC60335-2-40 (ED.6), has been 3rd party certified to be risk-free.
No annual refrigerant leak check requirement
According to the F-Gas Regulation (EU) 517/14 of the European Parliament and Council operators of equipment that contains fluorinated greenhouse gases in quantities of 5 tons of CO2 equivalent or more and which are not contained in foams shall ensure that the equipment is checked for leaks once a year. Operators of such equipment shall establish and maintain records for each piece of equipment documenting the dates and results of leak checks and rechecks after repairs.
Due to the low GWP of the R-32 (675) refrigerant used and also the lower refrigerant charge for most of typical mini-VRV installations, VRV 5 stays below the total amount of refrigerant of 5 tons of CO2 equivalent and therefore does not fall under the yearly leak check and registration obligation.
Delivering high real-life efficiencies
The new VRV 5 S-series not only incorporates the more efficient and lower GWP R-32 refrigerant, but also a range of new technologies, including a unique 3-row heat exchanger and swing compressor which contribute to high seasonal efficiency over the system’s entire lifecycle.
In this way, the system does not just meet but exceeds by far European Ecodesign requirements set to come into force in 2021.
More design versatility
Increasingly, there is a demand for the concealment of outdoor units, both for reasons of aesthetics and planning compliance. The VRV 5’s low-height, compact dimensions (870 x 1,100 x 460mm) and single fan design ensure maximum flexibility in placement, while fitting in a mini-van for transportation through busy city centre streets.
An automatically adjusted ESP of up to 45Pa enables the use of ductwork to hide the unit, while new low sound modes reduce noise emissions down to 39db(A) sound pressure level to meet urban regulations in densely-populated and mixed use areas.
Ease of handling and serviceability
Similarly, the latest mini-VRV series has been designed to make installation and servicing even easier and quicker for installers. The new casing incorporates four ergonomic handles for easy carrying and positioning, while the wide rotating access panel provides unobstructed access to all key components for servicing and maintenance.
The new series also features a refrigerant-cooled PCB, with integrated cool/heat selector and a seven-segment display simplifying commissioning.
Available in a range 4-5 and 6HP, both with single and three phase power supply, the new
VRV 5 S-series can be combined with Daikin’s signature Round Flow and Fully Flat cassette units as well as a range of concealed ceiling and wall-mounted indoor units. Additionally, air handling units and Daikin’s control products can be integrated to complete the total solution.
Convenience and comfort
Like other Daikin VRV solutions, the VRV 5 S-series incorporates the variable refrigerant temperature feature which prevents draughts, for optimal comfort at all times.
Smart controls make the VRV 5 S-Series easy to use, with intuitive online and voice control via Amazon Alexa or the Google Assistant.
Creating a sustainable future together
Daikin is committed to minimizing its environmental footprint and that of its customers.
Our direction is based on three key elements, which together provide the stepping stones to realise our goal to become CO2 neutral by 2050.
Innovation – using the latest technologies to develop products to meet customer performance needs while reducing CO2 emissions and energy consumption.
Circular economy of refrigerants – LOOP by Daikin unites all our actions to create this circular economy of refrigerants, such as our offering of units with reclaimed refrigerant and the Daikin refrigerant recycling machine which allows installers to recycle refrigerant to be used again for field charges.
Smart use – Smart controls such as the Daikin Cloud Service or key card controls prevent energy waste, while our expert advice and predictive maintenance ensures optimum operation and uptime.
