Creating a healthier building environment with Daikin’s new smart Indoor Air Quality Sensor

Press Release, June 2021

Launching this month, Daikin’s new Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Sensor offers a powerful measurement and monitoring tool for managing the building environment to enhance the wellbeing of occupants and visitors in schools and light commercial buildings such as restaurants, retail outlets as well as offices and hotels. The smart solution helps to monitor the current indoor air quality status in order to be able to take the necessary steps to improve it.

Vienna, June 2021 – A standalone, compact device, the new IAQ Sensor sits easily on any flat surface or can be wall-mounted. Setup and configuration takes less than a minute using the downloadable App. Connected to a collection server through Wi-Fi or NB-IoT (Narrow Band IoT), the device continuously monitors a range of environmental parameters to provide a comprehensive picture of air quality. The information can be displayed on different formats, such as on a mobile App or video wall displays. Customized reporting with programmable alerts enables corrective action as required to ensure clean, fresh air.

Why Indoor Air Quality matters

Ambient air pollution accounts for an estimated 4.2 million deaths per year[1]. While the dangers of outdoor pollution are widely acknowledged, there is less awareness of the invisible dangers inside buildings, which people might experience at home, at work or when spending their leisure time indoors. Most of us spend over 90% of our time indoors, where pollution can be up to two to five times worse than outdoors, affecting the wellbeing of individuals over time. Today, around 91% of the world’s population lives in places where air quality parameters surpass recommended WHO limits[2].

When designing HVAC systems, delivering optimal climate conditions is about more than cooling and heating alone. Ensuring adequate air filtration to remove dust, pollens and odors harmful to health is important. Furthermore incorporating sufficient ventilation to dilute and remove airborne pollutants and protect against contaminants, allergens and viruses, while maintaining the correct humidity level in air-conditioned spaces is essential to building health.

Taking control with the new Daikin IAQ Sensor – The Benefits

With a totally new approach to monitoring air quality, the Daikin IAQ Sensor offers immediate, real-time tracking and control of air quality parameters. It allows users to see how the indoor environment quality affects the health and productivity of staff and visitors and helps to take necessary countermeasures.

  • Simple to install with a minimal design that provides discreet monitoring, the IAQ Sensor comes with 12 sensors and 15 parameters, measuring a range of factors from ambient light, air and sound pressure to temperature and humidity.
  • Measuring dust and air quality, the device also collects information on electro smog, levels of CO2 and Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC) generated by, for example, aerosol sprays, cleaning products and disinfectants.
  • Configuration is easy with Daikin’s App (available via App Store or Play Store). Once the QR code on the sensor has been scanned, the App provides guidance at every stage of the process.
  • The IAQ Sensor connects with Daikin’s Caelum monitoring platform. In addition to displaying data in real time, the platform allows periodic reports to be generated from the data collected, customizable by frequency and content type.
  • The sensor’s tracking system is highly scalable, enabling you to track multiple tenants or buildings at client level as well as managing different profiles across clients, agencies and regions.

Increase your green credentials

As for all Daikin products, the new IAQ Sensor has been designed with maximum energy efficiency in mind: Better tracking information enables to control the whole HVAC system in buildings including the energy recovered through transferring heat and moisture between airflows and it can help improving LEED[3]  and WELL[4]  building certification scores by earning IAQ credits. By showing the IAQ sensor parameter status on a digital screen or video wall at their premises, a company can demonstrate its commitment to provide a clean and healthy indoor environment for staff and guests.

Continuously improving standards

“Today, more than ever, effective air quality monitoring is essential to understand how and where we should improve the air quality to protect the people who occupy the buildings. To this end, further developments are planned for release in 2021/2022, including the integration with Daikin on Site and Cloud Service Platforms later this year. At a later stage, it will also be possible to integrate the sensor into the ventilation system control to achieve smarter ventilation in the buildings”, says Mert Gönlüsen, Business Development Applied Systems at Daikin Central Europe.
