Unique cooling keeps data on the move

Brunn am Gebirge, October 2015 _ With businesses increasingly dependent on digital and mobile technology, reliability is paramount to protecting business-critical data and processes. The concentration of IT equipment in server rooms and data centres pose a tough challenge, emitting significant quantities of heat which need to be removed through continuous cooling, around the clock, 365 days a year.

Maintaining the right conditions for IT system infrastructures places a high load on cooling systems. Specifically designed for Data centres, IT server rooms, Telecom shelters and laboratories, DAIKIN’s Sky Air system offers a reliable and efficient solution for precision cooling requirements. Unique new features and dedicated control settings provide automatic backup for system units while maximising system flexibility and simplifying installation, commissioning and maintenance.

Typical split cooling applications efficiency relies on normal living room environments. However when this design is applied to the less humid air found in a precision cooling environment, leads to frequent downtime. By providing flexibility of operating temperatures to a accommodate a wider range conditions and maximises opportunities for running in ‘free cooling’ mode, the Seasonal Sky Air offers reliable, best in class seasonal efficiency, with a direct positive impact on running costs.

Reliable cooling with constant temperatures

Setpoints for room temperatures are considerably lower in technical environments than those required for general comfort cooling. The DAIKIN Sky Air technical cooling system accommodates asymmetric combinations, allowing oversizing of indoor units by up to 30% to take advantage of the full operating capacity of outdoor units to extract heat. The outdoor units can cope with higher evaporating temperatures, therefore downtime is minimised.

Delivering consistent temperatures (20-21°C) with a 30% humidity, the Sky Air system continues to operate in ambient temperatures as low as -15°C, using higher evaporating temperatures to prevent ice build-up on machines which can otherwise lead to system downtimes of up to 15 minutes. The wide operating range provides continuous cooling even in outdoor temperatures of up to 50°C and accommodates fluctuations in server activity.

Highest efficiency

A recent Greenpeace study estimated data centre emissions are growing by 13% every year and within two years, Data Centres could account for around 1% of global electricity use. The DAIKIN Sky Air system for technical cooling is the only system on the market with asymmetric combinations displaying full seasonal energy ratings. Clear EU energy labelling means users have the confidence the Daikin Sky Air System will perform reliably all year round.

A unique economiser mode built into the system saves energy by utilising free cooling – making use of outdoor air in cooler months to allow refrigerant-based cooling components to be shut off or operated at reduced capacity. Increasingly, a requirement to meet ASHRAE and other industry energy standards, operating in economiser mode offers the potential for huge energy savings while maintaining a low carbon footprint.

Maximum flexibility and control

Managed via a specialised RTD-10 control system, the Sky Air technical cooling package enables automatic rotation of multiple indoor units, providing automatic switching between units after a set period in use. Providing continuous backup for total system reliability, this feature also ensures easy maintenance, with no downtime, guaranteeing all day every day, all year around.

Outdoor units can be combined with a range of indoor unit options including wall-mounted, suspended or concealed ceiling fittings depending on available space and design requirements. A range of control options are available including the Modbus Gateway RTD-10, DTA113B51-Daikin PCB or Intelligent Touch Manager – DCM601A51.

Simplified and enhanced application

The design of the new DAIKIN Sky Air system simplifies installation reducing piping and floorspace requirements. A new and enhanced selection process unique to in the market ensures fast and easy commissioning. The new procedure cuts the selection process by 50% and can be completed in just two easy steps.

Step 1: Determine requested indoor temperature and respective cooling demand.

Step 2: Select the DAIKIN Sky Air combination that will satisfy this demand using the simple data tables.

Built for the business environment

Designed for optimal performance and zero downtime requirements, the DAIKIN Sky Air solution provides the optimal solution for IT Server rooms and Data Centres. Its ability to offer asymmetric combinations delivers versatile operating capabilities and flexible configuration.
