DAIKIN’s Fully Flat Cassette wins „Universal Design Award 2014“

Brunn am Gebirge, May 2014_ Daikin’s Fully Flat Cassette has won the „Universal Design Award“ for its unique and iconic design, user comfort and high energy efficiency. It was singled out by the judges for its ability to be integrated discretely into ceilings and its design flexibility, which means it can be used in any commercial building.

The Fully Flat Cassette was designed and built in Europe, specifically for the European market. Its development is the result of a collaboration between Daikin Europe and renowned international product designer „yellow design“. The cassette is designed to blend seamlessly with modern commercial building interiors and is the first to fit completely within a standard European ceiling tile, enabling lights, speakers and sprinklers to be installed in adjoining panels.

The Universal Design Award is an annual international competition that judges entries on more than just exceptional product design. The jury of design experts and consumers also look at the range of applications for the product; how simple and intuitive it is to use; its fault tolerance and safety; the marketability and market potential, the technical innovation behind it; plus its sustainability and environmental-friendliness. This year, 118 entries from 15 countries competed for awards in nine categories, with entries ranging from sound-absorbing chairs to a skateboard park in India.

A flexible solution for modern building design

The Fully Flat Cassette’s four flaps can be controlled individually to redirect air flow as required, avoiding problems if changes to the indoor layout leave the unit close to a wall or in a corner. It is also compact enough to be installed in suspended ceiling voids as shallow as 300mm. Along with its flush fit and neutral colours, this means the fully flat cassette provides increased design flexibility for architects and reduces potentially costly issues for building owners, when it comes to building refurbishment.

High energy efficiencies through intelligent sensors

The fully flat cassette’s optional intelligent sensor kit includes a presence sensor and floor sensor to further improve efficiency and comfort. The presence sensor can reduce energy consumption by up to 27% and adjusts air flow to ensure comfort throughout the room, while the floor sensor redirects air flow to ensure a more even temperature distribution.

Commenting on the award, Carl Lievens (Managing Director of Daikin Central Europe) said: “We at Daikin are convinced that the Fully Flat Cassette is a perfect blend of design and technology and so we are delighted this has been recognised by the judges. Whether it is part of a Sky Air or VRV system, the Fully Flat Cassette range offers a flexible and stylish solution to highly efficient climate control.”
