Brunn am Gebirge, January 2017 - Clarivate Analytics, the former Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters, has announced its Top 100 Global Innovators for 2016, with DAIKIN Industries Ltd. among the innovation leaders. The award is given to companies that are considered top innovators based on an objective and scientific analysis of global patent information. Those companies that are active in innovation through research and development, Intellectual Property protection and commercialization are identified and awarded with a place on the list of Global Innovators. DAIKIN Industries Ltd. is for the 4th time one of the Top 100 Global Innovators.
Measuring innovation
To measure innovation, Clarivate Analystics bases its methodology on patents, as patents are considered a key measure of innovation. Innovation in a further step is considered the fundamental driver of economic well-being and competitive advantage and success. The patents are then analyzed according to 4 criteria: volume, success, globalization and influence.
4 Criteria to become a Top Global Innovator
In general, the analysis focuses on all organizations with 100 or more patents of new inventions (first publication) from the most recent five years. The analysis counts the patent families to avoid any duplicate counts. A shift from quantity to quality has been observed during the past year. More innovation (in DAIKIN’s case, new technologies) with greater global impact is considered more important as this brings more citations and therefore more influence, which is also one of the criteria.
