Daikin recently supplied two water-cooled centrifugal chillers from the DWSC range for an important district cooling project in Milan, Italy. The newly installed units for this project will provide cooling to a city neighborhood which has been designed to be modern, green, and environmentally sustainable.
Total cooling capacity: 5MW
The project aims to provide district cooling in an area of Milan as part of its transformation to become a “contemporary neighborhood”. This modern urban redevelopment project aims to create a new landscape and places to live in the city.
The area includes residential buildings (500 houses), 10,000m2 dedicated to retail outlets, and 30,000m2 of office space, all in a 160,000m2 park which is only 16 minutes from Milan Duomo.
The main goals of this redevelopment project were to improve energy efficiency and minimize the environmental impact of the area. To achieve this, an efficient cooling system was vital for lowering energy consumption and reducing CO2 emissions.
Additionally, the installation needed to be remotely controlled and monitored effectively from a control room located in a different part of the city.

To meet the project’s required cooling capacity, efficiency, and environmental constraints, Daikin supplied two centrifugal chiller units from the DWSC Series.

The units provide high capacity with low energy consumption thanks to the centrifugal compressor and optimized unit design, all developed in-house by Daikin. The DWSC Series also has a Daikin inverter integrated in the electrical panel of the unit which will help to constantly adapt the units’ energy consumption to the cooling needs of the area served by the installation to avoid energy wastage.
The units combine DaikinOnSite (DoS), a unique service for remote monitoring and smart maintenance, with a control solution integrated in the units to provide remote monitoring and control options. This enables remote users to analyze the performance and operations of the chillers and schedule preventive maintenance to reduce the likelihood of breakdowns and ensure continuity of operations.
